Most of the authentic cuisine served at Chinese and Vietnamese wedding receptions is meant to express happiness, fertility, and longevity. The number of courses serves is also significant. For example, at a Chinese reception, the standard course number is 8 because the number 8 is indicative of good luck.

Often wedding banquets begin with cold plates which feature sliced meat, nuts shaped like dragons, or jellyfish. The dragon is symbolic in a wedding because it is the male role, while the phoenix is equally symbolic as the female role. The Chinese word for “lobster” means “dragon shrimp” while chicken feet means “phoenix feet”.

In terms of the authentic food served at such wedding receptions, things such as shark’s fin soup often follow an appetizer. Shark’s fin is very expensive and as such, this delicacy is meant as an indication of wealth. Roast suckling pig is important as the roasted pork is indicative of virginity. At the engagement party, the groom often presents an entire roasted pork to the family of the bride.

Peking duck and lobster are important because of their color. Red is meant as a color of happiness so serving red lobster or Peking duck is meant as a symbol of celebration and joy. Serving the entire dish inclusive of the legs and head is a symbol of completeness.

Squab or any other type of fowl is significant because the tender meat is a symbol of peace. Generally, two pigeons are served to the newlywed couple as a symbol of peace when they begin their life together. Quail is served in whole to every guest so that they will enjoy a peaceful life. If you serve fried chicken, it is a symbol to the couple of having a good life because “red chicken” in Chinese sounds the same as “good life” in Chinese.

Serving whole crab can be used in lieu of fried chicken because of the aforementioned reasons. Most wedding banquets include chicken and duck. In order to avoid conflict, sometimes sea cucumber is served with vegetables because “sea cucumber” in Chinese sounds the same as “good heart” and as such, it is symbolic of selflessness, wishing the couple to think in a selfless manner throughout their life together.

Fish sounds like the word “plentiful” in Chinese which means that you are wishing the couple a life full and abundant. Serving noodles is a symbol of longevity because of the long strands. When you serve sweet red bean soup with sweet buns as dessert, it is meant as a symbol of sweet life for the new couple. Often the soup contains lotus seeds as well as vegetables which resemble bark to indicate one hundred years of happiness together. The lotus paste used in the bread is meant as a symbol of fertility while the shape and color are peach, an indication of long life.

Many of the more fashionable and large affairs are even televised. There are a few traditions associated with Sweet 16 birthday celebrations. For many families and young adults, the sweet 16 is a special event. If your sweet 16 birthday celebrations feature a candle-lighting ceremony, then on the birthday cake there are often sixteen candles, each of which has a different meaning. The first candle in this instance is meant for the parents. The second is meant for any siblings, but if there are none then it represents the grandparents. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth candle are indicative of the remaining family members. The seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth are for friends. The fifteenth candle is for the best friend and the last candle, the sixteenth, is meant for a boyfriend or significant other. Some traditions place a seventeenth candle for good luck.

One of the other sweet 16 birthday celebrations is the show ceremony. This is when the birthday girl sits in a chair and her father, godfather, grandfather, or uncle approaches her holding a pair of heels on a decorative, celebratory pillow. Until this point, the girl traditionally wore slippers or other flat shoes and as her father ceremoniously places her feet in high heels it is a symbol of her transition into womanhood.

Another of the sweet 16 birthday celebrations is the tiara ceremony. For women this is much the same as show ceremony only, in lieu of the father and a pair of high heels, the mother approaches the daughter with a tiara which is placed upon her head as a symbol of her becoming a woman. There are times when the tiara ceremony is combined with the shoe ceremony and the girl sits in the same chair while both people approach her with two different pillows.

One other tradition in sweet 16 birthday celebrations is the father-daughter dance. The same as that which is performed at a wedding, this dance is often to a traditional song or slow jazz song and it the first song played during the night. Those in attendance sit and watch as the girl dances with her father.

Some families like to hire a professional DJ and videographer to display a montage on several televisions or on a projector throughout the night. The photos or video clips are often a combination of those taken over the years as the birthday girl grew up until present. Sometimes the photos are provided by the family to the DJ or videography. Guests can sit and enjoy the montage or it can be playing in the background during the party.
